How to check if your Nintendo Switch is banned

5 min read · 6 reliable signals + error code reference

"Online suddenly stopped working… am I banned?" — Nintendo doesn't tell you directly, so you have to read the symptoms. Here's the checklist.

Ban types (understand these first)

TypeImpactRecovery
NNID banThat account's online play blockedMake a new account
Console banThe whole device blocked from online servicesPractically impossible — buy a new console
Suspension1-30 day timeoutAuto-restored after period

The 6 ways to check

1Can you open eShop?

Home → Nintendo eShop. If it immediately throws "currently unavailable", that's a strong console-ban signal. NNID ban: another account on the same console can still open it.

2Online play works?

Try matchmaking in Apex / Splatoon / Smash. Error codes like 2124-XXXX mean ban-related. 2110-XXXX is network-related (transient).

3Check linking status in settings

System Settings → Users → Linking → if it shows "Restricted" or "Banned", confirmed.

4Google your error code

Common ban codes:

  • 2124-4007 — console ban
  • 2124-4025 — NNID ban
  • 2124-4508 — temporary suspension
  • 2124-5210 — anti-cheat / CFW detection
5Friends / Activity visibility

While banned, others can't see your "recent activity" or "now playing". Ask a friend whether they still see your activity.

6Test with a different network (mobile tether)

Switch from Wi-Fi to phone hotspot, retry. Same error → device-side ban confirmed (not a network issue).

What to do if banned

Console ban

Practically irreversible. Nintendo support replies "violated terms of service" and that's that. Options:

NNID ban

Make a fresh NNID. You lose access to eShop purchases tied to the old NNID though. Same console limits new accounts to 1/day typically.

Suspension

Auto-lifts after the period. Stay quiet during it — disable any CFW/loader meanwhile.

After-ban warning: If you create a new NNID on a banned console and go online, the new NNID often gets banned too (Nintendo's ML correlates back to the device).

Avoiding bans in the first place

The secretchat.tel loader is designed to run on SysMMC + stock firmware, so following the above keeps you online for the long haul.
